There is a fascinating history to the Cambodia gambling halls that reside just across the dividing line from nearby Thailand, where casino gambling is illegal. Eight casinos are established in a generally small space in the metropolis of Poipet in Cambodia. This band of Cambodia casinos is in a prime spot, a three to 4 hour travel from Bangkok and Macao, the two largest wagering centers in Asia. Cambodia casinos do a huge business with Thai laborers and tourists from Malaysia, Japan, South Korea, and Singapore, with just a few Westerners. The phenomenal capital accrued from the casinos ranges from 7.5 million dollars to more than 12.5 million dollars, and there are a couple of limitations constraints for gambling den ownership. Ownership is assumed to be largely Thai; however, funding sources are cryptic. The borders are ceremoniously open from 9:00 a.m. to 1700, and although visas are supposedly necessary to pass, there are methods around this, as is real of most borders.
The first Cambodia gambling dens premiered in Phnom Penh in 1994, but were required to close in the late nineties, leaving just a single gambling den in the capital, the Naga Resort. The Naga, a stationary boat gambling hall, features 150 one armed bandits and sixty gaming tables. The Naga river boat is open all day and night with forty two tables of mini-baccarat, four tables of 21, ten of roulette, two of Caribbean Stud Poker, and one each of Pai-Gow and Tai-Sai.
The initial gambling hall in Poipet, the Holiday Palace, opened in the late nineties and the Golden Crown quickly followed. A total of 150 slot machine games and 5 table games at the Golden Crown and 104 one armed bandits and sixty eight table games at the Holiday Palace. The newest Holiday Palace Casino and Resort contains three hundred one armed bandits and 70 gaming tables and the Princess Hotel and Casino, also in Poipet, has 166 slots and ninety six gaming tables, including 87 baccarat banque (the most dominant game), Fan Tan, and Pai Gow. In addition, there is the Casino Tropicana, with 135 slot machines and 66 of the familiar tables, as well as 1 table of Casino Stud Poker. An additional of the eight gambling dens in Poipet, again a part of a motel, is the Princess Casino with 166 slot machines and 97 table games. The Star Vegas Casino is part of an all-inclusive vacation and hotel complex that features numerous luxuries on top of the gambling hall, which has 10,000 square feet of 130 one armed bandits and 88 tables.
